Guimarães is known as the "Birthplace", due to the fact that there have been established the administrative centre of the County of Portugal by D. Henrique and later, in 1143, the governance of Portugal by his son, D. Afonso Henriques, first King of Portugal.
Guimarães is one of the most important historical cities of Portugal, with its historical centre, classified by UNESCO as Cultural Heritage Site. Its streets and monuments breathe history and charm. Be sure to go also to the town's main square, the Toural. Climb to Monte da Penha, to see breathtaking landscapes, using the cable car that parts from the city centre.
It is still suggested, if weather permitting and your curiosity so determine, a visit to the city of Braga, known as "City of the Archbishops. Make a pedestrian route by its historical centre and climb the hills to the contemplation of the three temples / sanctuaries of great beauty: Bom Jesus, Falperra and Sameiro.
